Athletics Championships

Director of Sport Mr Johnathan Redenbach shares some highlights from the long-awaited return of this important event.

The 148th Sydney Grammar School Athletics Championships was held at Weigall on Wednesday 1 March. After last year’s cancellation due to weather, it was good to see the boys competing for their Houses again. SGN House won the day, retaining the shield won by SGN in 2021.

There were some excellent athletic achievements on the day. A few standouts: Callum Cheung (IV) running 11.87 secs to win the U16 100m; Oliver Burton (VI) throwing 10.48m to win the Open shot put; and Jackson Dyne (IV) winning the U16 High Jump with a jump of 1.90m in a front of a cheering crowd.

Congratulations to our Age Champions: Bastian Tsiamis (I) U13; Angus Windeyer (III) U14; Myles Kapoor (III) U15, winning the Todman Trophy; and Julian Wylie (IV) U16, who won the WH Savigny Memorial Cup. Sam Davis (V) was the U17 Age Champion, winning the Hyam Marks trophy; and Daniel York (VI) won the WH Savigny Memorial Trophy by taking out the Open Age Championship.

Congratulations, also, to the day’s ‘Triple Threats’, our three-event winners: Bastian Tsiamis (I), Angus Windeyer (III), Julian Wylie (IV) and Sam Davis (V).

Speaking of athletic achievements, the Grammar Gift was the same spectacle of colour, ingenuity and blind luck it’s always been. Dr Loeffel’s decision to spurn the opportunity to go back-to-back meant that it was an especially open field this year. Milo Abrahams (VI), starting off scratch and running in a chicken suit, stunned a line-up replete with athletic luminaries, including Dr Tong, Mr Jones and Mr Butera, but couldn’t quite chase down race-winner Ms Irwin.
