Swim Season at St Ives

Sportsmaster Mr Brett Townley-Jones reports on how St Ives boys are enthusiastically embracing the swimming programme and achieving some notable representative results.

The start of the year is always an intense time. Not only are there new boys, new classes, sport trials and music auditions, it is also swimming season! On day one, boys are timed in their selected strokes to enter the School Carnival. Surely a stressful time for new boys and Year 3 boys who haven’t even spent time with their class or in the pool. However, the boys take it in their stride and demonstrate a calm approach as they challenge themselves and each other.

In Week 3, the carnival was held at the Macquarie University Aquatic Centre, with our first spectators in three years!

The races began with a flourish of colour and chants on a beautiful summer day. Records were broken and a classic heart stopping finish to the Senior House Relay brought all the boys together to finish off the carnival! Following the carnival, the St Ives Swim Team have been training on Monday mornings, and our first ever diver, Theo Percossi (Year 3) has been preparing for the upcoming IPSHA meet.

On Wednesday 1 March, St Ives boys arrived at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, ready to face some ferocious competition from other independent schools.

Both relay teams set the standard and qualified in fifth (Junior Team) and second Sportsmaster Mr Brett Townley-Jones reports on how St Ives boys are enthusiastically embracing the swimming programme and achieving some notable representative results. Swim Season at St Ives (Senior Team) place.

It was a great way to get the boys pumped and ready! At the end of the 50m freestyle events, James McDonough-Smith (Year 4, U9) and Harry Ayer (Year 6, U12/13) qualified. As the day progressed, all boys worked hard to hit their PBs with great success, with Harry qualifying for the 50m Backstroke, Butterfly, 100m Freestyle and the 200m Individual Medley and James qualifying for the 50m Butterfly. Jacob Deere (Year 6 U12/13) qualified for the 50m Breaststroke, Butterfly and 200m Individual Medley. On top of this, Theo dominated the (U9) 1m Springboard competition and was placed first to progress to the CIS Swimming and Diving Championships.

All boys in the team have worked extremely hard and we wish them all the best for the upcoming carnivals and in Term IV when they will continue with a number of carnivals to finish the year! Well done boys!
