MUSICAL NOTES

Grammar musicians have been very busy so far this year, with boys participating in many concerts, festivals and competitions.

Competitions

As usual, a number of boys have represented Grammar at outside music competitions both locally and internationally. In late June, both Leo Huang (IV) and Raymond Wang (IV) were selected as finalists in the Lane Cove Concert Band’s Young Soloists’ Competition. Sean Weatherley (VI) was a finalist in the prestigious Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra’s Secondary Schools’ Concerto Competition, where he performed Poème by Chausson.

Towards the end of the Term II holidays, Raymond Wang travelled to London to participate in the Royal Academy of Music’s New Talent Festival. Raymond was invited to participate in this event after winning the Virtuoso Prize in the Woodwind & Brass section of the festival in 2022. This year he was announced as the recipient of the Royal Academy of Music Prize. As the winner of this prize he received £1,000, a one-on-one masterclass and admission into the Junior Royal Academy of Music without audition. Warm congratulations go to all of these boys for their fine achievements.

Australian Combined Schools’ Music Festival

During the Term II holidays, 40 boys and 5 staff travelled to Perth to participate in the 22nd Australian Combined Schools’ Music Festival. The festival was hosted by Methodist Ladies’ College, Claremont and the boys were billeted by local families. Around 180 pupils from 12 independent schools from around the country were involved in this biennial event. The boys were allocated to the Orchestra, Concert Band, or Choir and each group rehearsed with a professional conductor over the first three days of the festival. On the final day, the ensembles rehearsed in the venue for the gala concert, which was the beautiful Winthrop Hall at the University of Western Australia. The festival was a great success and Grammar musicians were well represented in each ensemble. We now look forward to the 2025 ACSMF which will be held in Adelaide.

Term II Music Festival

Grammar’s biennial Music Festival was held in Term II and the theme of the festival was “Music for Kings and Queens”. The festival opened with a thoroughly entertaining new work written by Vocal Tutor, Ms Kym Parrish. The cabaret-style performance was held in the Wallace King Room and performed by vocal pupils from Forms III-VI and accompanied on the piano by Ms Pen Campbell.

Closely following the opening concert was Grammarpalooza. Once again, Grammar’s rock musicians were in fine form. The bar was set high by the opening act, Junior Rock, which featured some of Grammar’s youngest rockers. They were followed by a variety of acts including bands, duets and solo items. As always, the standard was impressive and the high energy performances were nicely complemented by the brilliant light show. To top it off, all money raised on the evening was donated to the Prefects’ charity.

Two nights later, a large and appreciative audience was back in the Alastair Mackerras Theatre for the guitar concert. This concert featured all of the School’s guitar ensembles including the Alhambra, Tommy Emmanuel, Sor, Aguado and Segovia ensembles. For one item, the Alhambra and Tárrega ensembles were joined by young guitarists from the Edgecliff and St Ives Preparatory schools.

The final concert for the 2023 festival was held in the John Vallance Hall and featured a large number of ensembles. In keeping with the festival’s theme, repertoire included music from Game of Thrones and Star Wars, as well as traditional favourites such as Purcell’s King Arthur, Handel’s Royal Fireworks Music and Walton’s Crown Imperial. The concert (and the festival) culminated in a performance of Handel’s coronation anthem, Zadok the Priest. Almost 400 performers were involved in this final item, including boys from the Preparatory schools and the specially formed choir made up of parents and staff. The sound they made was truly impressive and a fitting end to the festival!

Term III Concerts: Concert A (Bands) and B (Final Form VI); Guitar Concert

The first concert of Term III, Concert A (combined bands concert), was held on 27 July. This featured all of the College Street bands as well as a bands from the two Preparatory schools. The bands performed in front of a large audience in the John Vallance Hall and were expertly directed by Mr Bradley Lucas and Dr Robert Busan. It was wonderful to see the progression boys make through their Grammar journey, from the youngest, beginner bands to the most senior College Street band, the Wind Ensemble.

On Thursday 17 August, our classical guitarists presented a very enjoyable concert in the Alastair Mackerras Theatre. The performances were a mixture of solo pieces interspersed with ensemble performances by the Sor, Aguado and Segovia guitar ensembles. There were some very fine performances on the evening that demonstrated excellent technical skills and musicianship.

The second major concert of the term, Concert B, was held on 22 August in the John Vallance Hall. This concert featured many of the School’s senior ensembles and the significant contribution of our Form VI musicians, for whom this was their final College Street concert, was acknowledged throughout the evening. The first half of the concert showcased many of our string, percussion and jazz ensembles, while the second half featured many of our vocal ensembles, including Cantorum, School Choir, Junior Vocal Ensemble, Croonivores and Grammarphones. There was also a stunning performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto (1st Mvt) by Michael Liu, accompanied by an expanded AMCO.

The concert concluded with the School Orchestra performing a rousing rendition of Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture. The Form VI orchestra musicians chose this for their final performance and it is especially significant given it ends with a powerful arrangement of Gaudeamus Igitur, which is of course the famous melody our School Song is set to. This concert was a fitting finale for our Form VI boys who have contributed enormously to the musical life of the School.

Form V Instrumental and Vocal Competition

The annual Form V Instrumental and Vocal Competition Finals were held on 10 August and as expected, the standard of performance from the finalists was very high. The jazz finalists were fortunate to play with a professional rhythm section made up of Grammar instrumental tutors. The adjudicator had a very difficult decision to make and ultimately awarded First Place to bassist Theodore Cosgrove. In the Vocal section, we heard an operatic aria, a French chanson and a German lied. First Place went to Taj Macé for his thrilling rendition of Schubert’s Der Erlkönig. The final section of the evening, the Instrumental section, had eight finalists playing a variety of instruments. All of the finalists played well and enormous technical skill and musical expression were on display. After careful deliberation, the adjudicator awarded First Place to Ivan Zhang (clarinet). Second Place went to James Woo (vibraphone) and Third Place was awarded to Edmond Sim (trombone).
