Army Cadets instilling valuable virtues

Cadets has a long tradition of giving boys the opportunity to develop vital skills and characteristics that can be applied throughout life.

Army Cadets at Grammar was founded in 1870 by AB Weigall. It is a purely voluntary activity and has attracted over 200 boys per annum for the last ten years. Many of the principles remain the same, but one of the most important aspects is for everyone to have fun.

Army Cadets provides a great introduction to living in the field, navigation, basic first aid, self-discipline, teamwork, and a host of other skills. We also engage in fun activities such as abseiling, rock-climbing and kayaking.

Certainly, one of the greatest strengths of Army Cadets at Sydney Grammar School is the opportunity for the older boys to exercise genuine leadership and command. The older boys design our training programmes and oversee the running of the unit.

Army Cadets is structured into three basic areas. Firstly, all boys in Form II, who are managed by a handful of boys from Forms IV to VI. Secondly, the boys in Form III, with a large number of them having participated in Cadets in Form II, but also boys who did not. They are also managed by a handful of boys in Forms IV–VI. Thirdly, the elite group of boys who are not directly involved with the Form II or III boys. These boys fulfill key roles in specialist areas as well as deliver high-end training.

A typical year sees all the boys starting in Term I and spending the first eleven weeks preparing for a two-night camp at the end of term. This short camp allows the boys to get out and get dirty. They can put into practice all the skills they have learnt as well as have other lessons which are not able to be taught in the classroom.

Terms II and III involve more training and development in preparation for our week-long Annual Camp. This is the culmination of the training year and easily the highlight of the programme.

At the start of Term IV, we conduct our Ceremonial Parade at Weigall. Boys in Forms III–V are then invited to participate in Promotions Courses in preparation for the following year.
