Australian Volleyball Schools Cup

With the School celebrating its 25th season of volleyball, 2023 was a year of many individual and team achievements.

Volleyball continues to go from strength to strength at Grammar. One highlight during 2023 was having ten State representatives across U14 to U18 divisions; however, it was the inspiring effort and unpredicted result from Grammar’s 12th outing at the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup in December at the Gold Coast that exceeded all expectations.

A team consisting of then Form II, III and V athletes faced the task of simply ‘doing their best’ to uphold the School’s profile at the national schools’ championship. They faced a big challenge, especially after the bronze medals won by both 2022 teams in the Year 12 and Year 11 divisions. With minimal preparation time, Jeremy Cheung (captain), Kai Clement, Jackson Mather, Cian Stoermer, Luke Thurgood, Lucas Woo (all Form VI), Hinata Morishita-Lee, Lachlan Nam, Dexter Staley, Aden Tay (all Form IV) and Connor Stoermer (Form III) competed in the Year 11 division, displaying grit and determination, exemplifying what it meant to ‘show up’ for your team.

Over the course of the weeklong competition, with highly experienced coaches giving Grammar the competitive edge, Mr Martin Reader and Mr Ben Abbott guided the athletes in a routine of early morning well-being sessions and match day preparations, followed by day and evening matches. Grammar dominated the competition early in the 16-school division, winning their first pool round undefeated, and then, finishing second in the championship pool behind Lake Ginninderra. This school from Canberra proved to be the only hurdle for Grammar, and once again, our athletes found themselves facing Lake Ginninderra, but this time, in the gold medal match!

With support from the Grammar spectators, echoed by a strong following on Grammar’s social pages, this match was the high note of 2023. In an extremely well-fought and cleverly crafted game, Grammar achieved second place, narrowly missing out on the gold. Whilst the athletes were disappointed, the weeklong experience yielded both individual and team achievements that cannot be quantified by any podium placing. This was an outstanding result and a valiant demonstration of Grammar’s competitive spirit.
