College Street masters retire

We pay tribute to three long-serving staff members who retired in 2023.

Mr Bill Raeside

Bill was appointed to Grammar in 1998 as the Database Administrator and a Mathematics and Science master by then Headmaster Dr Townsend. Bill was a Tutor in REP House from 2000 to 2004 and acted as Housemaster in 2001. He became a Form I Tutor in 2005 and remained as one until 2022. He was appointed as the Director of Technology in 2004 and as such oversaw the timetable; served as chair of the Common Room Committee, Catering Committee and Branding Committee; was a member of the Fixture Committee and the Schools General Operations Committee and assisted in the Academic office.

When we got thrown in at the technical deep end with the onset of COVID-19, it was Bill and his team that got us all working online, implementing SharePoint and OneDrive along with Zoom video conferencing, and livestreaming of events. Bill was actively involved in many developments at Grammar over his time, including upgrading and maintaining all aspects of the School’s network, the technical aspects of all venues across three campuses, implementing financial processing and reporting, upgrading the School website, creating both staff and parent portals as well as the Grammar app and sport fixtures. He was responsible for newsletter applications, installing security cameras in all campuses and upgraded classroom audio visual including internal streaming services. He upgraded the School’s telephony systems, implemented Wi-Fi, assisted in implementing Schoology and Canvas learning management systems, implemented School social media platforms, oversaw the change to laptops across the campuses for boys and staff, managed photocopiers and printing, installed many database applications for the School’s Alumni, Human Resources and Payroll departments. He developed examination and invigilation management applications as well assisting in developing the School’s statistical analysis system, centralised mark book and integrated reporting systems. Bill went on three Kokoda Track expeditions with the School. Bill’s helpful, positive nature was valued and we wish him well in his retirement.

Mrs Terry Kelso

Terry retired from Grammar at the end of 2023 after the best part of two decades. The boys in her classes appreciated her straightforward and no-nonsense attitude, which left them in no doubt as to exactly what was going on, and what they needed to do.

These same qualities have also endeared her to her colleagues in the Common Room, where her efficiency is legendary. I will treasure her ability to question the sanity of any matter with a simple, “Hello??”, delivered as only a true Queenslander could. In her time, Terry has been a Second Master in Junior Science and Chemistry, and of late has also assisted with the implementation of the School’s migration to Canvas. She has excelled in all of these roles, and will be sorely missed as she leaves us to spend more time with the world’s vineyards, and her family.

Dr Andrew Haines

Andrew retired from Grammar at the end of 2023 after 25 years at the School. In the classroom Andrew was a master of his craft, and every time I had the privilege to observe him in action I came away better for the experience, as of course did all of the boys in the class. In his time at the school, Andrew served as Second Master in Physics, and as Director of Science from Tania Disney’s retirement until the end of 2019. Andrew was unambiguous in his desire for the Science department to teach solid science, and did not mince words about the poor nature of the previous Stage 6 Science courses. His uncompromising attitude and healthy mix of cynicism and pragmatism has left the Science department in strong shape, and I thank him for his outstanding efforts over such a long period of time.
