Edgecliff boys reflect on 2023

Director of Studies Miss Julia Wilson provides an insight into the vital self-reflection aspect of the semester reporting process at Edgecliff.

 

The end of a school year brings around an inevitable buzz and a certain spring in the step, but also prompts reflection, inviting us to take a moment to remember the ups and the downs, the memorable experiences, the challenges and the successes. As a school, we acknowledge this in many ways – a variety of end-of-term celebrations, whole-school Assemblies, and of course through our Semester Two reports.

As part of Edgecliff’s reporting process, all boys reflect on one of our School Values or Attitudes to Learning and articulate a comment for inclusion in their report. Many boys selected ‘using feedback effectively’ as an attribute that resonated, hence commenting on their ability to take on and listen to feedback, aware that this informs their next steps in learning. Some boys selected ‘engaging positively in the learning environment’ and commented on their ability to listen carefully to instructions and ask questions. Some boys may reflect in a different way, valuing their efforts in contributing to the wider class dynamic through encouraging an anxious friend before he presents a speech to the class, or looking to include a classmate who hasn’t yet found a group to join. It may be ‘having effective time management skills’, ensuring they are on time to an instrumental lesson, getting back to class promptly after lunch on Weigall or completing a writing task in the allocated time.

Setting even a small personal goal that is published in his report can add further value and ownership to the learning process, and hopefully initiate or facilitate conversation at home.
