A round up of happenings and achievements in the Grammar community

Farewell Michael Kelly

Michael Kelly (MBK) coached rowing at our shed from 2015 and was the Front Gate Sergeant from 2016 until his retirement in April 2024. He brought a natural integrity, commitment and warmth to the front of the School. He has overseen thousands of boys in and out of College Street, and has been of great assistance to staff, parents and visitors. Michael has our admiration, sincere thanks and best wishes for the future.

2023 Tanner Drawing Prize

We were delighted to resuscitate the Tanner Drawing Prize following its lengthy hiatus due to the pandemic.

Boys contending for the prize have to meet the criterion of achieving marks within the top 10% of the Form IV cohort in their Annual Drawing Examination.

To a roving and continuous audience of both pupils and masters, the boys committed themselves to the lengthy task of producing an A3-size still-life using only graphite.

The results were remarkable, making the judging process incredibly difficult. There had to be but one winner, however, and that was Jonathan Lee. Hearty congratulations to Jonathan, and all the visual artists who participated – Isaac Trinh, Felix Moyes, Rohan Saha, Will Byrne and Yul Shin (all IV).

And sincere gratitude to Mr Howard Tanner who continues to sponsor this important annual prize.

The Ranby Bugle

Developed and generously donated by former pupil and Army Cadet CUO Executive Officer, Ethan Tsui (OS 2018), the brass bugle was created in an historically appropriate style, commissioned to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Sydney Grammar School’s Cadet Corps and coronation year of His Majesty King Charles III. On top of the custom-made presentation box made of Australian Blackwood, a gold-plated plaque is beautifully engraved with three different incarnations of the Grammar Cadet Corps badge.

The Grammar Music department arranged for this year’s trumpet music scholar David Ahn (V) to play the bugle formally for the first time at the School’s Remembrance Assembly on Friday 10 November. It is intended that the bugle will be played on significant occasions such as the Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services every year at the School.

Grammar Cadet Corps’ actual founding followed the approval by the NSW Governor on 12 November 1870. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the bugle’s construction and debut was delayed, with the anniversary retroactively acknowledged this year.

Vale Mrs Li Gin

Mrs Li Gin, beloved Teacher Librarian at Edgecliff Preparatory School from 1998 – 2018, sadly passed away on 11 January 2024 after a relatively short illness.

Mrs Gin transformed the Library at Edgecliff into the heart of the School over her twenty years there.

Headmaster Mr Ian Stephens, who worked with Li for her first eleven years at Edgecliff, says “Mrs Gin understood that to develop a love of reading, you first have to develop a relationship. She was kind and interested and welcoming, but also a source of deep knowledge. She understood the boys’ quirks and differences and would tap into their interest to find the right book. She was also adept at encouraging their curiosity and extending their thinking. As a colleague, she was so kind, patient and funny. She was inspiring and worked tirelessly to support teachers in their classes”.

Li was also the Debating Coordinator at Edgecliff, and in her last year in 2018, both the Senior A and B teams won the ISDA competition grand final against two very strong debating schools – a fitting way to end her successful tenure. Furthermore, Li edited the annual school magazine Gateway for many years, where her attention to detail and thoroughness was second to none.

Her warmth, expertise and encouragement of all she worked with will not be forgotten.

Dr John Vallance honoured

A big congratulations to our former Headmaster, Dr John T Vallance (1999 to 2017) for receiving the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) honour for his significant service to education, to library services and programmes, and to the arts.

Cornell International Real Estate Case Competition
Levas and Kalas Photo.jpeg

Michael Levas and Dean Kalas (both OS 2018) studied commerce (finance)/law and graduated from UNSW in 2023.

In November 2023, they led a team of six to compete in the 15th annual Cornell International Real Estate Case Competition. The competition was hosted at the 7 World Trade Centre building in New York with 16 university teams from around the world participating. The team was awarded first place – the first Australian team to achieve this.

To reach this level, Michael and Dean progressed through three separate domestic rounds, each with a different real estate private-equity-style case to become Australian champions. This entitled their team to receive an all-expenses paid trip and invitation to compete in New York.

The Cornell International Real Estate Case Competition, developed by the Cornell Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University, tasks teams with analysing a commercial real estate private equity transaction over a five-day preparation period and presenting their analysis and proposal. The teams are judged on their investment recommendations and presentation skills. Judges in this competition are senior real estate executives. Sponsors of the competition’s international finals included Blackstone, KKR, BGO, CBRE, QuadReal, and other top real estate investment firms.

Michael is now beginning his career at McKinsey & Company and Dean is working at Macquarie Capital.

Grammar boys shine in 2023 HSC

The young men of Grammar’s 2023 cohort have achieved excellent HSC results. Seven boys earned the coveted top ATAR, fifty-seven boys were listed as All Rounders for achieving top band results in at least 10 units.

There were eight First in Course placements achieved by a group of four boys, including one who received a first in all four Classics subjects, and another who received first in both Music 2 and Music Extension.

Two other boys were placed first in Italian Extension and Physics respectively. There were forty-one Grammar placements in the Top Achievers list, and this total placed Grammar again second behind only the NSW School of Languages for Top Achievers. In total, boys from the School were featured 159 times in the Distinguished Achievers list.

Congratulations, Class of 2023!

Australian Geography Competition
Samuel Lesnie-James online.jpg

Earlier this year, Geography pupils participated in the 2023 Australian Geography Competition. The competition involved over 71,500 pupils from 772 schools across Australia. Pupils completed multiple-choice questions based on global geography. Samuel Lesnie-James (I) achieved an outstanding result and was placed first in the Year 7 level.

Music Scholar attains prestigious role
Waynne.jpg

Former Grammar Music Scholar Waynne Kwon (OS 2013) has been appointed as the Sub-Principal Cello with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Waynne studied at the prestigious Royal Northern College of Music in the UK, and he has been making quite a name for himself across Europe as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player.

Tri-Grammar success

In January, the First XI travelled to Brisbane to compete in the Tri-Grammar series. The boys started the competition strongly, defeating both Melbourne Grammar School and Brisbane Grammar School to win the T-20 competition. This is the first time Sydney Grammar School has won this competition since the inception of T-20 games in 2010.

Following on from this success, the boys then comprehensively defeated MGS in the two-day competition to win the historic bat in the 149th fixture between the two schools. The boys were unlucky not to win the Tri-Grammar Shield, losing their final match narrowly to Brisbane. Congratulations to captain Zack Winslow (VI), William Powell (VI), Charles Granger (VI) and Jonty Snyman (V) on their selection in the Tri-Grammar Merit team.

Old Sydneians’ Union Scholarship

Congratulations to Hugo Sharkey (VI) who is the recipient of the 2024 OSU Scholarship. The OSU has had a long history of supporting boys at the School through the OSU Scholarship. This scholarship is currently awarded annually to a candidate nominated by the School and as selected by the OSU Committee. The current scholarship is an award of $6,000 to the recipient to assist in post-school initiatives.

CEO of Bunnings visits Grammar

The CEO of Bunnings, Mr Michael Schneider, joined Grammar’s Business Society for a lunchtime interview to discuss his career journey and role within the Bunnings Group. Michael talked about his pathway to his current position, including the need to focus on strengths, the importance of travel and the willingness to take opportunities when they arise. He also discussed recent successes and challenges within his work.

Insight into College Street

The variety of activity that can be witnessed on any given day at College Street bears testimony to the rich diversity of educational opportunities we offer – a central plank of the Grammar ethos. The following snapshots of just some of these learning activities provide a worthwhile insight into how we fulfil that ethos each and every day.

1. Form II boys collaborating on a composition.jpg

Stimulating creativity

Form II started their musical year with a lesson in the Keyboard Laboratory where they collaborated on a composition task using the GarageBand software.

2. Form IV visual artists ‘making photographs’ with analogue cameras cropped.jpg

Stretching the imagination

Form IV visual artists flexed their creative muscle by ‘making photographs’ with analogue cameras.

3. Professor Eddie Woo made quite an impression with the boys.jpg

Mathematical star-power

Our boys were very excited when Eddie Woo, Professor of Practice in Mathematics Education at the University of Sydney, popped into their lessons. Better known as “Misterwootube” and Australia’s Local Hero Award recipient in 2018, Eddie spent the time between lessons signing diaries, mathematics textbooks, calculators, and even indulging in the odd ‘selfie’.

4. Masters have been participating in “Learning Walks”.JPG

Sharing ideas

The learning environment extends to masters too. They have been participating in “Learning Walks” to observe a rich variety of colleagues and discuss elements of good practice.

Soaring Dragon at the Willoughby Dragon Festival

Applied Arts master, Mr Benjamin Baxter, co-created a spectacular art installation, Soaring Dragon, which featured at the Willoughby Dragon Festival in February of this year. The piece is made of gold anodised aluminium, which is perforated to convey the texture of dragon scales and allow light to come through. It is lit from within and externally using colour changing nodes and DMX programming conveying a sense of movement.

Soaring Dragon was positioned above the reflection pool at Chatswood Library, where it connects water and sky in accordance with traditional depictions. Water and light are used to enhance each other by using reflection to create dynamic shape, activating the pool and mirrored glass with reflections enhancing the overall visual effect.

Dragons in the Chinese horoscope are traditionally associated with divinity, power and the ability to control weather. Often seen on the robes of emperors, many depictions show them soaring into the sky or emerging from the sea. Whilst connected with tempests, they also bring peace and are benign deities. Unlike Western fire-breathing dragons, they also do not have wings. While depictions display a varying number of claws, ‘real’ dragons should have five claws on each limb. Dragons with four claws are deemed as ‘serpents’.

Artist-In-Residence – Ms Sally Mayman
Sall Mayman Jotting Image.jpg

Edgecliff welcomed Ms Sally Mayman as a returning Artist-In-Residence. Once again, Sally ignited the boys’ passion for visual arts, bringing her unique style and talent to the School. Sally spent a fortnight working with all classes K–6, teaching the art of photography and the technique of cyanotype printing. Her residency succeeded in producing self-portraits for all Edgecliff boys, which brought to life each boy’s individual personality, to be uniquely captured on slate tablets.

Charity futsal game
masters.png

On Friday 9 February, a friendly masters vs Prefects charity futsal game was held at lunchtime. Organised by the Prefects, the competition aimed to raise funds for Gotcha4Life, a non-profit dedicated to building a mentally fit future. The gripping match resulted in a 5-5 tiebreak, leading to a nerve-wracking penalty shootout where the masters secured a narrow 3-2 victory over the boys. Thank you to the Prefects and Mr Gill for their efforts in organising this event, and everyone who donated for this worthy cause.

Welcoming our Chinese guests

In early December, two members of staff from the Kang Chiao International School Xi’an Qujiang Campus, Mr Wang and Ms Bai, visited College Street with a view to establishing an ongoing exchange programme. This followed an earlier visit to Xi’an in June by Mr Saurine and Ms Wang who were charmed by the beauty of the city and the warm welcome they received. Two Sydney Grammar School pupils from Form IV will take part in the inaugural exchange in May and will receive their Chinese partners in July. We look forward to a lasting connection between the two schools.

Australian Boat Race
Trophy.jpg

On 14 October 2023, three Old Sydneians represented the University of Sydney in the Australian Boat Race. Ryan Gibson (OS 2020), Henry Blackwell (OS 2020) and Wyatt Batt (OS 2017), were members of the victorious Men’s Crew, who won the Edmund Barton Cup. It was a tightly contested race, and the men from Sydney triumphed over other crews from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Queensland. Congratulations to our old boys who continue to add to our nation’s sporting history.

National Athletics Success
Jeremy 1.jpeg

Jeremy Lenthen (then Year 6) became the 12 Years 800m National Champion at the National Athletics Championships held in Launceston, Tasmania on 26 November 2023. He won in a time of 2.09.65 minutes. It was the culmination of a long representative pathway for Jeremy. He was also fortunate to represent NSW at the National Basketball Championships in Perth in 2023. As a result of his achievements, he was nominated for a Combined Independent Schools sports award.

Vale Mr Glenn Clark

Glenn Clark, master at College Street from 1981 to 1993 and then Headmaster of Edgecliff Preparatory School from 1994 until 2001, sadly passed away in January 2024.

Glenn was appointed Headmaster of Edgecliff Preparatory School, after serving as acting Headmaster following Peter Harwin’s departure in 1994. Glenn imparted devoted and loyal service to the School over 21 years. At College Street he was actively involved in teaching History and Asian Studies and also in rowing, fencing, debating and the Cadet Corps.

While Headmaster of Edgecliff, Glenn managed some very significant changes in the character of the School as well as holding it together during a construction programme which amounted to the virtual rebuilding of the School. He retired as Headmaster to pursue other interests in education and undertake a range of recreational pursuits such as travel, research, writing, sailing and diving.

2024 HSC Showcase Launch

Harvey and Milo Abrahams (both OS 2023) were presented with certificates at the 2024 HSC Showcase Launch held at the Roslyn Packer Theatre in February displaying talent and creativity from 2023 HSC Showcase pupils. They were accompanied at the launch by their Music Extension master, Mr Paul Gaske (Grammar Director of Music 2009–2023).

Both boys were nominated for the ENCORE concert (exemplary performances from the 2023 NSW Music cohort) and were selected to perform their Music Extension ensemble performance piece, Sérénade en Trio for Flute, Clarinet and Bassoon by Eugene Bozza, at the Sydney Opera House in March. Ivan Zhang (VI) completed the trio for this performance.

‘B Natural’ bring joy to Sydney Adventist Hospital

At the end of 2023, string quartet ‘B Natural’, comprising Nathanael Lo, Damian Cheung, Mikey Dummer and Alex Davidson (all IV), performed at the Sydney Adventist Hospital (SAN) in Wahroonga. They played in different wards throughout the hospital, as well as at the SAN volunteers and SAN theatre staff Christmas celebration event in December of 2023. The performance was very well received by the SAN community.

‘B Natural’ was formed back in 2019 and the boys have been able to share their music with different communities throughout Sydney including the Northern Beaches Hospital, Beecroft Nursing Home, St Ives Food and Wine Festival and busking around Manly and Chatswood.

Matthew Wahby and Thomas Thornthwaite (both OS 2022) have earned the prestigious University of Technology, Sydney Bachelor of Accounting Co-op Scholarship. The scholarship is for undergraduate study from 2023 – 2025. During this time, each pupil gains industry experience as interns in leading companies, as well as first-hand exposure to the global market through an intensive exchange programme. Matthew and Thomas are looking forward to using the accumulated skills and experiences from this programme to make significant and positive contributions to Australia in the future.

Teresa Kuhles retires
Teresa Kuhles_1.png

Teresa Kuhles joined College Street as the School Nurse in September 2007. We were sad to see her retire in February 2024. While she may have come to know her regular visitors quite well, we all appreciate her friendly, sympathetic approach to her work and her knowledge around the many and varied ailments she dealt with each day. Her assistance and discretion with preparing medical information and medical kits for an increasing range of activities is much appreciated. We wish her all the best in her retirement.

Edgecliff Learn to Swim Programme

In Term IV 2023, K–2 embarked on a six-week Learn to Swim programme, with the aim of providing the opportunity to improve swimming ability and increase confidence in the water.

The boys were assessed and split into ability groups so the swimming instructors were able to provide a challenge, while making the lessons fun and enjoyable. The level of improvement in this short time was impressive, and the boys are looking forward to getting in the pool again this year!

2023-11-14 National History Challenge 075.JPG

National History Challenge

On November 14 2023, Ryan (Pei Fu) Zhao (I) humbly accepted the first place award for the Year 7 National History Challenge at the Australian War Memorial Hyde Park. Ryan entered the competition on his own volition and his essay on the Petrov Affair was a thoughtful insight into how fear of the unknown, in this case communism of the post-World War II era, was propagated by the Australian government. His acceptance speech included a contemporary analogous discussion on the fear of Communist China, which was a thought-provoking call for cooperation instead of fear mongering for political opportunism.

IPSHA Swimming Carnival

Fifteen boys from Years 3–6 represented St Ives Preparatory School at the IPSHA Swimming Carnival on 5 March. Outstanding efforts were shown by all competitors, and our boys swam amongst fierce competition, improved upon their times from our School Carnival and achieved personal best results.

The team showed an impressive display of sportsmanship, and they represented our school with pride. A special congratulations goes to both the Junior Relay Team (James McDonough-Smith, Jayden Qiu, Aaron Wang and Jeffrey Yuan) and Senior Relay Team (Hudson Duong, Mars Ertav, Hugo Jones and Leo Print), as well as individually, Christian Lee (50m Freestyle), James McDonough-Smith (50m Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly) and Theo Percossi (Diving) who represented IPSHA at the CIS Carnival on 21 March.

Learning from eminent artists

Boys are privileged to be taught by practising and exhibiting artists in the Visual Arts department, engaging them with the broader professional field of artmaking. Recently, Australian Galleries in Rushcutters Bay held a solo exhibition of the sculptures of Mr Dale Miles. Mr Miles is an integral part of the Art department, assisting both boys and masters with their sculpture skills and his exhibition was met with critical acclaim.

Likewise, Mr David Horton, who oversees our HSC pupils specialising in welded-metal sculptures, held a prominent position at Sculpture by the Sea. Members of the Grammar community have enjoyed visiting Mr Horton’s work, which has enjoyed many column inches of positive press reviews.
Congratulations to both David and Dale on their recent success.

NASA Space Camp

Last December, Charlie Slack, James Young and Samuel Manasiev (all VI) flew to America to participate in the NASA Space Camp, where they engaged in many entrepreneurship and space-related tasks over a two-week period. The first week was spent in San Francisco, where they met with many space experts and began to work on a major project, Challenge X. They were tasked with designing and presenting an innovative solution to a specific space issue backed by statistics, 3D models, and extensive research.

Throughout the expedition, they enjoyed many cultural experiences, including a sightseeing tour of the Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard Street, and Pier 39. A highlight was catching an NBA game between the Hawks and Rockets in Houston.

Overall, the NASA space camp was a great success, with many great experiences and memories made.

Fencing championships

The 2024 Under 20 Oceania and National Individual Men’s Foil Competition was held on 3 February in Melbourne. This is the most significant competition in youth fencing in the Oceania region. A number of Grammar fencers, old and current, qualified to compete and distinguished themselves in this elite competition.

In the individual event, four Grammar fencers placed in the top 20 – Daniel Mautner (OS 2023, Captain of Swords 2023) won bronze, Ryan Lo (VI) placed 7th, Ryan Zhu (III) placed 17th and Alex Taylor (V) placed 18th. Even more impressively, the representative team for NSW consisted entirely of the same four boys Grammar boys. The team defeated squads from New Zealand, Victoria and Queensland to ultimately win gold in a nail-biting 45-44 victory.

Grammar Board Games

The Grammar Board Games club has been a regular fixture in the school calendar on a Tuesday afternoon for many years now. Each session brings together a crowd of enthusiastic Form I, II and III boys for an hour and a half of excitement and fierce competition played out over our extensive range of strategy games.

Whether boys are working cooperatively to save the world from a raft of infectious diseases in Pandemic or competing to build the most successful ancient civilisation in Seven Wonders you can guarantee there will be plenty of laughter and that lasting friendships will be formed.

Last year, for the first time, we extended the invitation to girls from SCEGGS Darlinghurst to come and join the fun on a couple of occasions each term. The overwhelmingly positive response from pupils at both schools to this initiative means that it will now become an integral part of the club’s calendar, adding yet another social dimension to this rewarding experience.

Mr Robert Fuller

From Bambini Strings to the Gewandhaus Orchestra

Vincent Lo (OS 2012), former pupil at St Ives and College Street, is now a member of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig. Vincent initially started in the orchestra’s fellowship programme in 2019 and in 2021 he received a permanent position. His advancement as a cellist in the orchestra will take another step this year, as he becomes an associate principal of the cello section.

Former St Ives Music master, Mrs Ros Murray was fortunate to see Vincent perform with the orchestra on a recent visit to Leipzig and was impressed by “the most beautiful lush sound” made by the cello section. The orchestra is touring Korea, Japan and Taiwan this year.

Traditional Chinese Music Appreciation

During the Tutorial in Week 3, an event on Traditional Chinese Music Appreciation was held in Alastair Mackerras Theatre, in celebration of Chinese New Year.

Boys in Form III and IV were shown four different ancient Chinese costumes representing the Tang, Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties, respectively. They were also introduced to three traditional Chinese musical instruments, the Pipa, Zheng, and Er Hu. Boys had the opportunity to try on the costumes and play the Chinese instruments themselves. It was evident that the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the activity.

Matthew Jinks from Form IV commented, “It was very interesting, and I learned a lot about old Chinese music and culture”.

The inaugural Khusid Ensemble

The Khusid Ensemble made its first performance appearance in the Term IV Jazz Concert.

Dr Malpass formed this group in honour of our beloved Vlad Khusid who passed away at the very start of 2023. As Dr Malpass can regularly recall (as a pupil of Vlad’s since the late 1980s), Vlad always strived to ensure that jazz would be strong at Grammar and loved by the boys, and his legend grew generation upon generation. The Khusid Ensemble is intended to be an ongoing nod to Vlad’s enormous capacity to inspire and his incomparable achievements.

The inaugural Khusid Ensemble features Harry Awad (IV) on piano, Jonty Snyman (IV) on bass and Brock Soedirdja (III) on drums playing Clifford Brown’s masterpiece Joy Spring.

A video from the performance can be viewed below.

Kung fu workshop

The Chinese Lunar New Year took place on 10 February 2024 and ushered in the Year of the Dragon. To celebrate the event, the Modern Languages department organised a kung fu workshop for boys in Forms II to IV.

During the event, Ms May Wang, a Kung Fu Master, provided a brief introduction to Chinese kung fu, demonstrating some basic movements. The boys showed great interest in the exercises and participated with enthusiasm.

Joshua Ellis (III) commented, “The kung fu demonstration was presented in a professional and engaging manner, and the ability to not only see the history behind kung fu in China but also actively learn and participate in the lesson was very enjoyable. We spent time learning the different poses and discovered that it is more than just kicking and punching. It is about the belief in connecting to your qi, or life force. Overall, I would recommend it to all people interested in traditional Chinese culture”.

Man Cave workshop

During 2023, both our Form III and Form V cohorts participated in a full day workshop with Man Cave. Co-founded by Hunter Johnson, Man Cave is a preventative mental health and emotional intelligence charity, that works with young men across Australia.

Accompanied by their Tutors and led by a team of young and dynamic facilitators, our boys participated in a series of workshops designed to explore gender stereotypes and healthy masculinity. They were encouraged to examine their own values and strengths, to express their thoughts and feelings and were provided with tools and resources to support their own well-being.

A highlight for many involved was the opportunity the day provided to share concerns and experiences in a supportive environment, and to hear from others who were going through similar experiences. Many commented on the importance of the “check-in” and how they will endeavour to be there in a more meaningful way for their friends moving forward.

The presenters effectively modelled the notions that they were offering: a healthy approach to masculinity and an ability to be vulnerable. They certainly made the “cave” a safe and inclusive space to be a part of. After such a positive response to the two workshops, the plan is to include Man Cave in our Form III and V programmes moving forward.

In Gallant Company

The Sydney Grammar School WWI Honour Board that dominates the northern end of the Big Schoolroom is recognised as one of the great school memorials to those who enlisted and gave their lives in the First World War. The Memorial was unveiled in 1921 by Sir Harry Chauvel, himself an Old Sydneian and Lieutenant General, preceding Sir John Monash. It records the names on the centre panel of 302 boys who lost their lives between August 1914 and April 1919 and on the left and right panels, 1,452 boys and staff who voluntarily enlisted to participate and survived. As a result of Mr Philip Creagh’s (OS 1965-66) extensive research on this subject, numbers have since been revised from what appears on the Honour Board. Boys that enlisted in total totals 2,172. Old Sydneians who died (represented on the centre panel) total 337 since 2014.

No other school in Australia made more of a contribution or suffered more casualties in World War I than Grammar. In Gallant Company by Philip Creagh is a tangible tribute to the memory of these Grammar boys whose futures were cut short just as they were entering the prime of their lives, and a spotlight on a significant era of the School’s history. It serves as a lasting reference for the Sydney Grammar School community, and hopefully will stimulate the desire to learn more about this influential historical period for Grammar and Australia, and inspire people to visit and honour those who lost their lives so far from home, so long ago.

Creagh’s extensive research uses resources from the School Archives, the National Archives of Australia and the Imperial War Museum records, and his hard-cover book includes short biographies of each Old Sydneian, including details of their school career, the circumstances in which they found themselves and their eventual fate during the War.

In Gallant Company is available to purchase via the Community office for $65 (plus optional postage).

Old Sydneians’ musical collaboration

Pictured: Felix Wallis (OS 2015) Rob Hao (OS 2017)

In September 2023, composer Felix Wallis (OS 2015) and pianist Rob Hao (OS 2017), together with Mr Marc Warry, recorded Felix’s piano works in the John Vallance Hall. The Four Preludes are available for streaming at the link below.

Since leaving Grammar, Felix has honed his compositional and arranging skills with Carl Vine and now works out of Church Street Studios. Some of his other recent work includes arranging strings for several chart-topping songs by the Kid Laroi, an AI-powered sound installation at the Sydney Opera House, a new minimalist/jazz/ electronica project (which can be found at https://www.felixwallis.com/work/miniflora) and various scores for film and TV, including two upcoming US shows and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup advertisement. Felix is also a member of the alumni big band Dr V’s Swing Thing, which is currently rehearsing a new work he wrote for the band.

Rob Hao has recently finished studying piano at the Royal College of Music in London where he is now working as a pianist and teacher. He performs with various contemporary and experimental music ensembles in the UK and often returns to Australia to perform newly composed pieces.

The Old Sydneians expressed their gratitude for the School’s support. “This recording was possible because of the support of the School and Mr Marc Warry, evidence of Grammar’s continued support of Old Boys’ cultural work,” said Felix. “This support for alumni and love for the arts brings the community together, and has also enabled the flourishing of Dr V’s Swing Thing over the years.”

While in town, Rob also joined a seasoned group of performers to record Felix’s Reconstruction Quintet, which can be heard at the link below.

Co-Education Programme

On Tuesday 7 November, Edgecliff Preparatory School welcomed the Year 6 girls from St Catherine’s School for a co-educational day. The boys and girls were mixed into small groups for a team-building activity organised by Be Challenged where they had to create a ‘Chain Reaction’, which spanned across 28 groups and 164 pupils! Following a short break for recess, the pupils then went into rotations which covered several of the specialist subjects offered at Edgecliff. The activities included:

Art – Newspaper Fashion Show – a fun teambuilding activity led by guest artist Jane Gillings, participants worked in groups to design, create and model their runway fashion on a red carpet.

Drama – Pupils worked within small groups to learn theatre sports games. They then worked together to create a simple, yet effective piece of theatre.

Spanish – Boys and girls created a ‘Wall of Culture’ through posts on Padlet. The groups researched, created and shared information about Spanish culture.

Sport – Pupils were split up into teams and they participated in a variety of games which were designed to be fun whilst promoting team-building skills.

The girls and boys had a barbecue lunch together at Weigall, and by all reports had a terrific day.
