SUMMER SPORT ROUND-UP

Director of Sport Mr Johnathan Redenbach updates us with all the summer sport action.

Basketball

A feature of the basketball season was the continued success of our younger teams. The 13As beat Newington 77-22, the biggest winning margin for Grammar in some years. The U15s as an age group won about three-quarters of their games; the 15Es and 15Fs were hugely successful, with the 15Es going undefeated for the season.

The star side of the junior basketball age groups was the 14As, who won the Fathers’ Association Trophy for the most successful team of 2023–24. After winning all six games last year as the 13As, they won all fourteen of their games this season to achieve an outstanding record of twenty wins and zero losses in the secondary school.

Things were a little tougher for our senior teams, and they were especially tougher for the First and Second teams, whose win-loss records fail to tell the whole story of seasons marked by unfailing commitment and loads of team spirit. Both competition teams displayed a resilience throughout the season that was a model for all Grammar basketballers to follow. Indeed, Firsts coach Mahesh Padmanabhan was moved to describe his team at the end-ofseason dinner as the most tenacious group of boys he has ever coached.

Particular congratulations must go to Jack Lacy-Smith (V), whose excellent season was recognised by his selection in the GPS Firsts team.

Cricket

It was a solid year for our competition cricketers, with the standout being the First XI winning the Tri-Grammar T-20 series for the first time since T-20 started in Tri-Grammar in 2010. The First XI then went on to regain ‘The Bat’ after defeating Melbourne Grammar in the two-day match. Four Grammar boys were selected in the Tri-Grammar Merit Team: Zack Winslow (VI), William Powell (VI), Charles Granger (VI) and Jonty Snyman (V).

Myles Kapoor (IV) had a stellar GPS season, scoring over 550 runs for the First XI. Myles was selected in the GPS XI, alongside Zack Winslow, who was named vice-captain, and William Powell.

The Second XI won six matches this season, falling just short of a seventh win in the final match at Weigall, where premiers Newington College managed to get home by two runs. The 15As lost only three of their fourteen matches and were awarded the OSUCC Shield for the most successful Grammar team of the season. 15A captain Monte Cairns’ (III) wonderful season with the bat earned him selection in the U15 GPS Chairman’s XI.

Just as we saw in basketball, our cricketing juniors promise much for the future, as evidenced by the clean sweep against Newington in the final round of the season.

Cross Sport

Cross Sport, a relatively new summer sport, gave boys in 2023–24 the chance to try team sports not usually played during the summer season (touch football, Ultimate Frisbee and Capture the Flag), alongside four-week-long modules in golf and swimming. Table tennis was introduced this year into the range of sports offered in Cross Sport. This was a great success and presented boys with an opportunity to learn the finer points of the game from Harry Nguyen, Grammar’s State-level table tennis coach.

Rowing

It was a successful season for our rowers, with the programme welcoming Mr Stephen Stewart back to the School as Director of Rowing (Coaching). It was great to see both the juniors and seniors posting the best erg scores in years for their age categories.

The First VIII’s fifth placing at Head of the River was our best finish since 2012, and the crew’s best time of 6.06 was the best since 2021. The Second VIII rowed consistently well and was able to keep pace with the First VIII during the early part of this year. The Year 10 First VIII showed enormous promise throughout 2023–24. The crew clocked a 6.26 in getting a fifth-place finish at the Sydney Rowing Club Regatta.

The Junior Shed had a good season, a feature being the Year Eight First Quad winning its race at the Reindeer Regatta. The Year Nines were always competitive; two standouts were the First and Second Quads achieving new best times in their respective State Championships finals.

Swimming

The 2024 Swim Team performed very well each time they hit the water this summer. A number of boys swam impressive times over the season, and a total of twenty-three PBs were achieved at GPS 5. This final meet of the GPS swimming season saw our juniors battle hard to secure a third-place finish. Both junior relay teams were selected to represent the GPS at the CIS representative meet in May, and a further eleven boys were selected to represent the GPS in individual events at this meet.

Congratulations to Captain Adam Tehfe and Matthew Cheng (both VI) for gaining representative selection in their final year, which means that they have won GPS representative selection in each of their six years at Grammar.

Taekwondo

The summer season is not a competitive one for Taekwondo, but for around forty boys it was a serious season of training and grading at Barker College and St Ignatius’ College and at the club’s home base at Willoughby.

Tennis

Outstanding junior success was also the theme in tennis this summer. The U13s and U14s had very successful seasons, winning several matches without surrendering a set.

The First and Second teams were always competitive in 2023–24. The Seconds had a very strong start to their schedule and ended up being the only team to beat the Shore School, the eventual competition winners. The Firsts, an especially young team this season, always made their opponents work in showing that the years to come at the highest level of Grammar tennis should certainly be fruitful. Three players were honoured by GPS representative selection: James Prestwich (V), Kai Sloane (IV) and Lucas Lin (III).
