Anzac Assembly

Old Sydneians and other guests joined boys and masters in the John Vallance Hall on Friday 3 May to take part in Grammar’s Anzac Assembly.

This year’s gathering in the John Vallance Hall of the whole School, together with visiting Old Sydneians and their guests, was honoured to hear from highly decorated guest speaker, BRIG Hugh Meggitt AM CSC (OS 1988). A 1997 graduate of the Royal Military College, Duntroon, BRIG Meggitt holds a master’s degree in International Relations and has served in a variety of Army regimental positions in Infantry, Combat Engineer and Special Operations units, respectively.

BRIG Meggitt’s operational experience includes the Sydney Olympics, East Timor, Afghanistan, the Japan Tsunami in 2011 and Iraq in 2016. He has commanded multiple domestic Australian Defence Force conventional and special operations, supporting Australian state and federal law enforcement agencies. In 2021 and 2022 he was posted to Washington DC as the Military Attaché and Head of the Australian Army Staff in North America and is currently posted as a Director General within Australia’s Special Operations Command.

In his address to the Assembly, BRIG Meggitt stressed the importance of remembering the sacrifice that Old Sydneians who were killed in WWI made, as immortalised on the Honour Board in Big School, the biggest of its kind within a school in the Commonwealth.

BRIG Meggitt flew to the United States immediately following Grammar’s Anzac Assembly and Lunch as an Australian delegate to the USA ‘Special Operations Forces Week’ in Florida and was unexpectedly awarded the Legion of Merit by the Commander of Special Operations Pacific.

Lunch for Old Sydneians and guests was held in front of the WWI Honour Board in Big School, with a presentation by European Battlefields Tour convenor Mr PJ Whild detailing the recent trip taken by thirty-five current boys and their families.
