The Prefects 2024

Assistant Headmaster (Senior Housemaster) Mr Craig Johnston pays tribute to the outstanding contribution made by this year’s Prefects and the example they set through their commitment to service.

Each year some twenty-four to twenty-six Form VI boys enjoy the honour of being elected Prefects in the School. They are, however, always encouraged to see their role as one of service. Across the last four terms, in performing their duties, all our Prefects can be commended on a job well done.

In a rather understated way, they complete regular duties on a weekly basis that help guide and protect younger pupils. As well, they assist at carnivals, regattas and seminars. There is a lot of work which is undertaken. The Senior Prefect and Second Prefect have regular meetings with staff to assist them in co-ordinating their plans with the complexity that is School life at College Street. Each term, a set of activities is arranged by Prefects and then fitted in with their busy academic and sporting commitments. I have an intuition that there is an inherited knowledge of practice and process which is passed year by year from one set of Prefects to another which helps each new batch approach their responsibilities with confidence and expertise.

A lot of enthusiasm is reserved for the fundraising activities. In 2023-2024, their own lights guided this cohort in the collective decision making to settle on Gotcha4Life as their charity of choice. To raise money, there were competitions in dodgeball, futsal, 3x3 basketball for boys in the School and there was also basketball with SCEGGS Darlinghurst Prefects. Barbecues were advertised and prepared. The elusive gelato stand even made a much-anticipated appearance on House Sports Day. Raffle prizes were gathered, spreadsheets drawn up, tickets sold and the draw live-streamed. A total of seventy thousand dollars was raised.

For their own Form VI cohort, Prefects coordinated the design and ordering of a unique jersey. They prepared the 2024 Yearbook, and there was a Trivia afternoon after the Trial Examinations. Prefects also enjoyed attending Leadership afternoons at other schools. To achieve all of this, they had to become masters of balance and organisation and thankfully they showed grace and generosity as well.
