Respectful Relationships

The Respectful Relationships Programme at Sydney Grammar School continues to grow and is now embedded in the fabric and culture of the School.

Supporting and equipping boys with awareness and understanding about forming healthy relationships is a vital component of a well-rounded education. The Respectful Relationships Programme is one practical way that Grammar is implementing this among our boys.

At the core of the Respectful Relationships Programme is the Learning Consent lessons that we run across all three campuses. We also offer social debating and chess and other co-educational, joint school activities which give our pupils an opportunity to engage with pupils from other schools.

Additionally, every year we invite Form V pupils to join our Future Leaders for Gender Equity group. They arrange a conference, inviting pupils from other schools to listen to a speaker and discuss issues of equity.

The Form VI Respectful Relationships event is a cross-school event with SCEGGS Darlinghurst Year 11 and 12 pupils. This year the event was hosted by Dr Joy Townsend and involved a presentation followed by small group discussions, led by pupils from both schools, exploring issues in relationships. The Grammar and SCEGSS pupils who were selected as leaders helped write the scenarios, attended training sessions to learn how to run a group discussion, and then co-led a group.

The feedback from the session was incredibly positive, with 95% of respondents considering the co-educational, joint school approach to be worthwhile and commenting that it was ‘the most organic and enjoyable programme I have done in regard to relationships’ and that it ‘was a great workshop, that I didn’t realise was so needed’. We will continue to work to offer Grammar pupils the opportunity to experience cross-school co-educational events.
