UK Football Tour

Assistant Director of Football and Geography master Mr Joshua Sztajer recounts a host of highlights from this action-packed tour.

In the April school holidays, thirty-four boys and four staff jetted off to England for two weeks of non-stop football. Stepping straight off the plane, we headed to the Den in South London to watch Millwall play Cardiff, followed by West Ham vs Fulham the next day at the London Olympic Stadium. While in London we trained at the world-class Fulham, West Ham, and Tottenham facilities, and toured the Emirates, Tottenham, and Stamford Bridge stadiums.

Our group comprised an Opens team and a combined U16s team. Both teams won their opening matches against Beaconsfield Town FC, who play in the 7th division of English football. Games against the historic Chigwell School followed, where the Opens drew and the U16s team won. During the week in London, we also visited Buckingham Palace, The Mall, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Oxford Street, and Leicester Square.

We then headed north to Sheffield, where the boys watched a thrilling relegation battle between Sheffield United and Burnley. Based out of Manchester, the boys trained at Wolverhampton Wanderers, followed by a dinner in a private box at the Molineux Stadium, and at Blackburn Rovers. Other highlights included an expertly led session at Liverpool’s former training grounds, Melwood, and tours of Premier League stadiums – Anfield, the Etihad, and Old Trafford.

Both the Opens and the U16s won their games against tough opposition from Neston Nomads FC, but it was our final games that proved to be the hardest for both teams. We faced up against the Thomas Telford School – a proper football school, whose alumni include a host of current and former professional players. In tough-fought contests, the Opens played their best game of the tour but narrowly lost 1-0 whilst the U16s managed a draw.

The tour culminated watching a tense battle for promotion between Coventry City and Hull. We then headed home bearing numerous football shirts, a host of memories and a determination to put what we had learnt into practice. All in all, an unforgettable trip!
