Entrance

Sydney Grammar School is an academic selective School. Boys wishing to enter the senior school at College Street (other than from our Preparatory Schools), must sit our entrance assessment tests in the year prior to entry.

Form I (Year 7)

Applications for Form I (Year 7) 2025 have closed. All years of entry beyond 2026 are open for enrolment.

An Application Form is available online.

The signed and completed form, together with the (non-refundable) application fee of $300, should be submitted online by clicking on the following link:

College Street (Years 7-11 entry): College Street Online Application

Key dates for our Form I (Year 7) 2026 Entrance Assessment Test are listed below:

Application/Registration Closes: Friday 14 March 2025

Form I (Year 7) 2026 Entrance Assessment Test: Monday 24 March 2025

Activities Days: Wednesday 30 April, Thursday 1 May, Tuesday 6 May and Wednesday 7 May 2025

An application fee of $300 should accompany the application form. Receipt of your application will be confirmed in writing, along with the next steps towards the assessment tests. Please note that time of applying has no bearing on the selection process.

Academic coaching for the assessment is not necessary, in fact, we strongly discourage it. Boys will be asked to complete English tasks (comprehension and creative writing) and Mathematics questions (number, patterns, algebra, measurement and data, space and geometry) including basic operations and problem-solving. All tests are paper-based and set and marked by Grammar’s teaching staff.

Boys who perform well in the assessment will be invited back to the School to participate in one of our Activities Days. Activities Days are non-test based social days designed to get to know the boys beyond their academic ability. Boys who show promise during Activities Day will be invited to an interview. Offers to join the School for Form I in the following year, will be sent to successful candidates after the conclusion of the interview stage.

Boys from Sixth Class at St Ives and Edgecliff will continue on to Form I (Year 7) at College Street unless, in the opinion of the Headmaster, after consultation with the Preparatory School Headmaster concerned, the boy is thought unlikely to flourish at the Senior School.

Entry to Forms II to V (Years 8 to 11)

Entrance assessments for entry to Forms II-V are held in early August each year.

Boys wishing to enter the School in the year groups above Form I (Year 7), also sit an assessment test in the year prior to entry. We are currently taking applications for entry into Forms II-V (Years 8-11) in 2026 and beyond. Assessment testing for 2025 has been completed.

The completed, signed form, together with the (non-refundable) application fee of $300, should be submitted online by clicking on the following link: College Street (Years 8-11 entry): College Street Online Application

Please note that the time of submitting an application has no bearing on the outcome of the selection process.

The 2026 entrance assessment test will be held in early August 2025 (date to be confirmed) between 8:45am and 12:30pm. Details regarding test day will be emailed to candidates shortly after the closing date (20 July). Candidates must be present at Sydney Grammar School in College Street. We do not offer remote testing.

Our assessment tests are paper based and comprise of English (comprehension and creative writing) and Mathematics (general ability) and set relevant to each year group. Boys who are creative, independent thinkers with a love of learning, are encouraged to sit our entrance tests.

Boys who perform well in the tests are invited to an interview. The interview is an integral part of the admission process and allows us to assess, amongst other things, a boy’s intellectual curiosity, the breadth of his interests, his ability and willingness to contribute fully to the extra-curricular life of the School.

Places in each year group are limited. Boys sitting our entrance tests do so with the knowledge that a place may become available. If a place is not available, boys will sit our tests to gain a place on our waiting list.
